《在傷口上重生：五一三事件個人口述敘事》收集了19個，由26人口述的五一三故事。所謂五一三，是指馬來西亞在1969年第三屆全國大選後第三天爆發的一場街頭暴力事件。雖然暴動只維持短短兩週，卻改變了許多人的生命和國家的發展路徑。
口述者包括死難者家屬、親歷者以及警官。這場突如其來的災難，半個世紀以來，在他們心中留下了怎樣的創傷印記？他們又如何與之展開一生的內在對話？在多元族群的社會中，我們該如何和平共存、共處？創傷後的和解之路又該如何開啟？本書除了嘗試記錄，更希望透過口述者一次次的述說，讓療愈與對話變得可能。
由「五一三事件口述歷史小組」製作整理出版的《在傷口上重生：五一三事件個人口述敘事》在各方面都是個創舉，因為五一三事件一直以來在學術上幾乎是不可觸的，口述史在大馬也還是個相對陌生的形式……這批口述證言數量並不多，但得來不易。畢竟回憶重大傷害如同撕開已結痂的傷口，因此采集受害家屬的證言本身面臨嚴峻的倫理考驗。
為何說？為何不說？這都涉及說故事的倫理，及個人對歷史的責任。因為未曾經歷者沒有權力做證言。

彷彿在做記憶拼圖的工作……五一三的歷史記憶，從隱晦到逐漸顯現，「真相」是眾人心裡的大石。但這或是一場難以找到真相的記憶之爭。「五一三」已成為幽靈，而幽靈會變形；變形的背後，永遠有一隻看不見的手。
縱然如此，在祈求尋找真相的途中，如何像掘墓人一樣，把那些深埋在底下，難以言說、隱忍的，或被各種防火牆阻擋的記憶，重新找到釋放與詮釋的方式，包括記憶中各種暴力的形式，都攸關人如何擁有免於恐懼自由的的生存處境。
