Ammonia - the old way
Standard hair colouring techniques involve high-pH chemicals - typically ammonia - to get the hair cuticle to "open up". This is a very aggresive process that effectively strips most of the hair's delicate balance of protein and moisture. To compensate for this, most well-known manufacturers include a synthetic post-colour conditioning treatment to coat the hair and reduce the appearance of damage (dullness) that has been caused by their colouring process.
Unfortunately, these traditional ammonia-based methods also utilise higher quantities of pigment which in itself can greatly increase the risk of an allergic reaction.
How our hair colour works
To colour hair we need to open the outer layers (cuticle) of the hair by raising its natural pH level. There are two methods to colouring hair the traditional chemical way and the alternative Tints of Nature method.
Alkaline boost - the Tints of Nature way
Tints of Nature hair colours use a specially-formulated alkaline moisturizing substance to gently increase the pH of hair without the use of harsh ammonia. This gentle process lifts the cuticle so colour can reach the core of the hair, whilst leaving its delicate protein and moisture balance undamaged.
Because your hair's pH is only gently raised compared to ammonia-based colours, it's much easier to bring pH levels back to normal - returning the cuticle to its fully closed state which results in lustrous long-lasting colour and shine.
