Rocaltrol contains calcitriol which occurs naturally in humans and is a biologically active form of vitamin D. It is used to treat people with osteoporosis but can also be prescribed by doctors for the treatment of low blood calcium in patients with renal osteodystrophy (a form of bone disease), hypoparathyroidism (reduced function of the parathyroid glands) and rickets. Rocaltrol works by improving absorption of calcium from the diet, stimulating growth of healthy bones and reduce bone damage.
