Instructions:-
Preliminary Work
Run Engine Until Operating Temperature Is Reached.
Stop Engine, Loosen All Spark Plugs About One Turn, And With Air Hose Blow The Dirt Out Of The Spark Plug Wells.
Remove All Spark Plugs And Gaskets.
Set The Carburetor Throttle Valve Wide Open.
Ground The High Tension Coil Wire And Turn The Ignition Switch On
Compression Test:-
Thread (Finger-tight-do Not Use A Wrench) Or Hold The Compression Tester To The Spark Plug Hole.
Crank The Engine Until No Increase In Pressure Is Noted On Gauge, Usually 3 Or 4 Revolutions Is Sufficient. Take A Reading And Write Down The Pressure.
Remove The Compression Tester From The Spark Plug Hole And Proceed To The Next Cylinder. Record Reading For Each Cylinder.
Specifications:-
The Actual Specification In Pounds Is Not Important. It Is Important That All Cylinders Have Approximately The Same Compression Pressures.
On High Compression Engines (150 Pounds And Higher) The Pressure Should Not Vary
More Than 15 Pounds From The Highest To The Lowest Cylinder.
On Low Compression Engines (Under 150 Pounds) The Pressure Should Not Vary More Than 10 Pounds From The Highest To The Lowest Cylinder.
Compress Readings Are Unbalanced When One Or Two Cylinders Are Considerabily
Causes Of Unbalance:-
Low Cylinder Compression Is Caused From Leakage Through:-
Head Gasket-explosive Sound When Running Engine.
Head Gasket Between Cylinders--compression Will Be Low In Two Adjacent Cylinders And Water May Appear In Cylinders Or Crank Case.
Valves That Are Not Seating Properly..
Piston Rings That Are Worn-pour A Teaspoon Of Oil Into The Spark Plug Hole To Seal The Rings. Repeat Test. If Compression Reading Increases, The Rings Are Bad; No Increase Indicates A Bad Valve.
High Cylinder Compression:-
Is Caused By Accumulation Of Carbon In That Cylinder. High Compression Readings In All Cylinders Is Caused By An Even Accumulation Of Carbon In All Cylinders. This May Cause" Pinging" That Is Difficult To Eliminate.
