畢業於牛津大學，曾擔任牛津大學與倫敦大學講師、《泰晤士報文學副刊》副主編。文風深受作家亨利．詹姆斯影響，熟稔古典音樂也熱愛建築，他對文學的知識更是豐富得驚人。
