現任南方大學學院圖書館館長、馬華文學館主任、《蕉風》執行編輯、通識教育學士課程講師、《南方大學學報》編委及柔佛州作協聯委會主席。
著有小說集《雙鎮記》（2005）、極短篇小說集《埋葬山蛭》（2011）、散文集《等待鸚鵡螺》（2011）、詩集《養死一瓶乳酸菌》（2014）、短篇小說集《我的老師是恐怖分子》（2018）。
編著有《有志一同：馬華同志小說選》（2007）、合編著《新加坡華文文學五十年》（2015）、《魯迅在東南亞》（2017）、《五四在東南亚》（2019）等。
聯合執導紀錄片《隱現之間》（Faham，2018），在柔佛州的自由電影節首映。
內容簡介：
2007年，有人出版社出版了《有志一同：馬華同志小說選》，收入9篇同志題材的小說。12年後，許通元再度編選馬華同志小說，推出這本《號角舉起：馬華同志小說選2》，續為馬華同志文學添寫新頁，拓展馬華同志小說的版圖。入選的同志小說，並不局限於男同性戀者和女同性戀者，也包括其他性／別弱勢族群，統稱在LGBT的大傘下。
