夏綠蒂是勃朗特三姐妹之中最受矚目、也最多產的一位。她已出版的四本半自傳體小說至今仍廣為流傳。夏綠蒂1816年出生於約克郡索頓鎮（Thornton），排行老三，父親是愛爾蘭籍牧師派屈克．勃朗特，母親瑪麗亞．布倫威爾來自康瓦耳郡彭贊斯鎮（Penzance）。
1820年，派屈克．勃朗特被任命為教區牧師，舉家搬遷到西約克郡的哈沃斯鎮（Haworth）。1821年，夏綠蒂的母親過世，她的阿姨伊莉莎白前來擔起照料這個家庭的責任。勃朗特家六個孩子彼此相伴，在鰥居父親和嚴格姨母的教導下成長。
1824年，年紀稍長的四個女兒被送到科恩橋女子教會學校就讀，《簡愛》裡的羅伍德學校就是這所學校的化身。學校裡惡劣的生活條件致使兩名姊姊瑪麗亞與伊莉莎白死亡（兩人同一年死於結核病），夏綠蒂的健康狀況也從此衰弱。
夏綠蒂的第二所學校是位於里茲與哈德斯菲爾德之間的洛海德學校，她在那裡度過一段愉快的日子，並結交了兩名生命中的好友，這兩位朋友分別以不同樣貌出現在 她的小說中。夏綠蒂後來返回該校任教，不久又放棄教職，決定跟妹妹艾蜜莉合力在哈沃斯設立學校，兩姊妹為此前往布魯賽爾的黑格爾寄宿學校取經。在布鲁賽爾 時，夏綠蒂無可救藥地愛上已有妻室的黑格爾先生，這段經歷後來融入她另一部小說《維萊特》（Villette）。
夏綠蒂的第一部小說《教師》（The Professor）遭出版社退稿，她再接再厲創作了《簡愛》，這本書奠定了她在文壇的不朽地位。夏綠蒂回絕過三門婚事， 1854年答應嫁給父親的助理牧師尼可斯。可惜這段婚姻為時甚短，隔年夏綠蒂不幸死於懷孕併發症。
內容簡介：
