本名張煐，一九二○年生於上海。二十歲時便以一系列小說令文壇為之驚豔。她的作品主要以上海、南京和香港為故事場景，在荒涼的氛圍中鋪張男女的感情糾葛以及時代的繁華和傾頹。

一九九五年九月張愛玲逝於洛杉磯公寓，享年七十四歲。她的友人依照她的遺願，在她生日那天將她的骨灰撒在太平洋，結束了她傳奇的一生。
