傅柯（Michel Foucault）的《性史》原出版時分為三卷（《知識的意志》、《快感的使用》、《自我的關懷》），後經增補（《肉身的告白》），共有四卷。它們延伸前作《知識考古學》與《監視與懲罰》所開啟之研究。傅柯將其分析集中於我們以「性」（sexe）和性本質（sexualité）所指稱的現象組合。此一龐大計劃的主軸，並不在於起身反抗性的「壓抑」以求將之解放，而是在於顯示性生活如何啟動了一種想要知曉與性相關一切的系統性意志，而它亦系統化成為「性的科學」，此一科學後又接續地打開了一通往對社會中與性相關的生活進行治理的道路，而後者在我們的生存中有越來越多的影響。
傅柯對於談論性的論述進行考古學研究（包括情色文學、告解的實行、醫學、人類學、精神分析、政治理論、法律等），而此一論述自從17世紀開始，一直延伸尤其是到19世紀，而我們晚近的「性解放」姿態，仍將其繼承。檢查封鎖和自由解放，這兩種態度，最後仍相遇於同一類型的預設：性乃是我們生命中所有現象的原因，正如同它支配著社會存在的整體。
