在香港土生土長的楊秀瓊，是1930年代著名的游泳健將，有「美人魚」之稱。憑著堅毅鬥志和刻苦鍛鍊，未足十二歲，已成為首名以破紀錄成績奪得香港渡泳海冠軍的華人。1934年遠赴菲律賓出戰遠東運動會，連摘四金，揚威海外。也是奧運史上，首位代表中國參加游泳比賽的女運動員。
日本侵佔香港期間，她冒險投身抗日情報工作，戰後在香港致力推動扶貧和拯溺服務。這位在民國和香港歷史上都留下功績的前衛港女，卻不幸因國共鬥爭及性別歧視等原因，生平事蹟長期在中國大陸被扭曲訛傳。
為了尋找楊秀瓊的一生經歷，捍衛香港本土歷史，香港記者潘惠蓮遠赴加拿大、南京、上海等地，經三年多搜集資料、訪問楊氏後人、翻查日本解密檔案，完成至今唯一考證楊秀瓊生平的著作：《尋找「美人魚」楊秀瓊───香港一代女泳將抗日秘辛》，以紀念這位一代女泳將百歲冥壽。
