書中的「孽子」是一些脆弱的孩子，被遺棄在街頭被逐出家門、屢次從家中逃跑或是未被了解，他們聚集在半明半暗的隱密處，沈湎於為錢而做的愛、屈服於為他們短暫命運設置信標的長者，而最終，他們畢竟還是要在彼此宿命的運數中那種粗暴的、劇烈的溫柔裡相互取暖。聽到一則這隱密王國的傳說，他們都會目瞪口呆；這些孩子雖墮落和違反常情，但卻又感情豐富且樂於犧牲；前輩的故事在他們身上往往會起一種集體身分認同的作用。
