Why Vitamin K2 is Important for Your Heart
Heart diease is still the No.1 killer in the world. According to WHo (World Health Organization), it is estimated that 17.7 million lives are robbed by heart diease every year.
Haert and blood vessel diease - also called heart diease - includes numerous problems, many of which are related to a process calledatherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a condition that develops when a substance called plaque builds up in the arteries, making it harder for blood to flow through. If a blood clot forms, it can stop the blood flow. This can cause a heart attack or stroke.
Poor cardiovascular health usually develops over decades, signified by vascular calcification - which is the accumulation of calcium in the arterial walls - and arterial hardening from plaque deposits, in which calcium is the main mineral component.
The Vitamin K Family - K1 vs K2
K vitamins are a group of fat-soluble vitamins. In the past, K vitamins were thought to be a single vitamin, refferred to as Vitamin k. However, K vitamins are technically a group of fat-soluble vitamins whse function is significant for human health.
The two most important forms found in food are Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) and Vitamin K2 (menaquinone) :
- Vitamin K1 is known for its role in blood coagulation (clotting).
- Vitamin K2 also contributes to coagulation, but more importantly, it is a form newly recognized for its essential role in building and maintaining strong bones, as well as inhibiting calcium deposits in the arteries and blood vessels.
