The Chair of Malay Studics at Victoria University of Wellington was instrumental in bringing together the Institute of Malay Civilisation of UPSI, and the Religious Studies Programme and Asian Studies Institute of VUW. It was most propitious as it led to two-way visits and talks by the two of us in 2003, and then the Colloquium on Religion and Identity on 15th-16th September 2004 jointly organised by VUW and UPSI held at VUW, and finally the publication of this book.
