Upon graduating with a First Class Honours Degree in Geography from University of Malaya in 1964, Datin Zaharah Mahmud embarked on an academic career that spanned thirty three years. Upon retirement from the University of Malaya she embarked on a second career as full time environmental consultant. She has always been interested in the special relationship between traditional societies and the environment and has devoted much of her research and publications to this area.
