At last! The elephant in the room is not only acknowledged but caringly examined from trunk to tail by Malaysian social scientist Kua Kia Soong. This is the first in-depth expose of racism & racial discrimination in Malaysia, written from a historical and class perspective. It focuses the nation to confront once and for all the ʻBumiputera agendaʼ which has been implemented with impunity since the New Economic Policy in 1971. These discriminatory policies fail to meet the standards of international conventions and continue to stymie Malaysiaʼs goal of achieving high-income status by 2020.

This book is about the politics of race and class in Malaysia, highlighting the structural conditions that enable the crude manipulation of race to serve the economic interests of the ruling elite. The chapters on the Emergency contain declassified documents from the British Public Records Office, which were made available after the 30-year secrecy rule was lifted. The author offers alternatives that are needs based and thus race-free by doing away with such discriminatory policies, rent-seeking activities and patronage politics.

ʻHis copious references with detailed annotations are the first of its kind on this subject which is often considered sensitive by the beneficiaries of such policies… The author must be congratulated for his dedicated research, analysis, and conclusions.ʼ

Datoʼ Param Cumaraswamy, Former UN Special Rapporteur

ʻ… a brave  analysis  of crude communal populism, corrupt crony capitalism, fuelled today by the privatisation of state assets, and the lasting impact on Malaysia's maligned and vulnerable ethnic minorities of state violence.ʼ

Liz Fekete, Institute of Race Relations, London

ʻ… the correctness of his thesis not only remains intact but has been reinforced…This is a must read for all concerned about changing the country's course of future direction.ʼ

Dr. Lim Teck Ghee, Director of Centre for Policy Initiatives

ʻI was impressed by his thorough research and deep analysis. I am sure this new book will be a great contribution to the understanding of Malaysian society and politics.ʼ

Dr. Syed Husin Ali, Former professor, University of Malaya

ʻIt is a book that remains valuable in contemporary Malaysia at a time when public discourse, government action or inaction, and policies are being determined by right-wing Malay interest groups inside and outside of UMNO.ʼ

Jacqueline Ann Surin, Editor of The Nut Graph
