What is it about?

This book tells the story of Owen who lives in Penang. He is an active child and gets into all sorts of mischief, like any child his age. He paints the neighbour’s cat, wipes the cake knife on Mrs Patma’s sari, and doesn’t understand why he isn’t allowed to play the piano with his feet.

His parents try their best to keep up with him and his antics.

They think he’s just an active child up to the point that he gets a “0” on his Maths paper. That’s when they decide to take him to the doctor, who recommends they see a psychologist. The psychologist believes that Owen has ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). The signs are all there.

The book ends with a list of the signs of ADHD, letting parents and children know that it’s okay to have it. It even highlights that American Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps also has ADHD.

What can children learn from it?

Despite the fact that it looks like a picture book or a story book, I believe this book is more for parents than children.

There seems to be too many words in this 86-page book for a toddler or preschooler to enjoy.

That said, older children and parents will enjoy reading this labour of love. As a reader, I can’t help but feel that there are a lot of personal experiences in this book; each one retold in a light-hearted manner.

The journey that Owen and his parents go through as they discover ADHD is one that parents and older children will appreciate, especially if you have someone with ADHD in the family.

The lovely tales of everything the family goes through and what Owen does will resonate with those who have experienced the disorder in their lives.

What did I like about it?

I like that the book is upbeat and that Owen is amusing. The book is written from his perspective. Some of the things he does will remind you of your own childhood (like stuffing paper in his back pockets to make the caning in school less painful).

The book introduces the signs and symptoms of ADHD to readers and only later reveals what it is that Owen has, and why he behaves the way he does. I thought this was a more interesting method of introducing ADHD to readers, because initially you wouldn’t know it is a book about the disorder. You might just think Owen is really active and inquisitive about everything.

I also liked the fact that the ending helps parents see that having a child with ADHD is not a death sentence; your child is just a bit different. That doesn’t mean he or she can’t or won’t achieve great things in life – as proven by the example of Phelps.

The best part is that we see ADHD through the eyes of a child.

Kudos to author June Chiang for her fine job in fleshing out Owen and the mischief he gets up to. The book has a nice flow to it as we watch Owen grow up. I would like to read more about Owen’s adventures and find out how he does as he grows up.

The watercolour illustrations by Ammi are beautiful. She has captured the sights of Penang very well. The Taiping Zoo and the street scenes stood out for me.
