Faultlines -- Six new writers from Silverfish Books

It has been a while since we unleashed a group of new and exciting writing talents on unsuspecting Malaysians. Not that we have been idle. After introducing Shih-Li Kow, Chua Kok Yee and Rumaizah Abu Bakar in News from Home, we published Rozlan Mohd Noor, Iskandar Al-Bakri and Matthew Thomas, all previously unknown authors.

In the introduction to News from Home, I said, “This volume is the first in, what we hope will be, a series unearthing another generation of writers who can hold their own against the rest of the world, and still remain distinctly Malaysian.”

Unfortunately, it has not been that easy.
Not that we have not come across many talented individuals over the years. But, talent alone is not enough to excel in anything, let alone writing. There is this huge four-letter word called ‘work’; and another called ‘life’ that always gets in the way. (Then there were many who are more in love with the idea of becoming writers, than actually writing, but that’s another story.)

In this volume we present six writers (five from Malaysia, and one from the Maldives), from different Silverfish Writing Programmes, who not only show signs of talent but, more importantly, stamina.

People read for many reasons. For me, the best part of reading and editing these stories was about learning something new about us, past and present, from the country’s many untold and untellable stories. I discovered a tango club in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, got a glimps life in the new villages, confronted the limits of my hypocrisy, and laughed out loud at many wacky tales about us.

If you are Malaysian. you’d identify with many of the situations. As a visitor, you’d be hard-pressed to get a better quick guide to the country!
