“The three academic should be complemented for doing a content analysis of newspaper with the aim of understanding how national issues are made relevant to the readers and how ethnic issues are contextualized in a national perspective.”
Prof. Dato’ Sri Dr. Syed Arabi Idid
Rector of International Islamic University Malaysia (2006-2011)

Ethnic Media & Nation-Building

As in other multi-ethnic countries, the functions of an ethnic newspaper in Malaysia have always been defined and confined by two competing expectations. On the one hand, the respective ethnic community from where its readers are drawn, expects the media to perform the role of reporting events deemed significant to the community.

These range from issues relating to the ethnic community’s education and culture to matters affecting the well being of the ethnic group as a community. On the other hand, at the top-down level, ethnic newspaper are expected by the state to act as a bridge between the government and the community, and as a partner to promote national integration, in order to serve the larger national interest of building a united, harmonious and prosperous nation.

Based on recent empirical research, this book provides a comprehensive understanding of how and to what extent ethnic media has played a role in Malaysia’s nation-building process. In particular, the focus is on the aspects of media framing and on the above-mentioned issues, and their impact on Malaysia’s nation-building as seen by readers, media practitioners, politicians, government officials, intellectuals, and socio-cultural and business elites across different ethnic groups.
