Product Description

Kaidon type "Carbon Ceramic" spec series is another milestone in our expedition of technological innovation. The latest technology boasts the advantage of having carbon-ceramic as its building material. Lightweight but strong rotor discs are capable of delivering unmatched performances in the field. Having a higher coefficient of friction, carbon-ceramic rotor discs assist drivers by providing a faster and smoother braking system. Since excellent braking correlates to consistent performance in sports vehicles, carbon-ceramic discs maintain braking force stability over time due to the material's ability to work at high temperatures. Carbon-ceramic discs, as a result, are exceptionally resistant to brake fade, particularly when braking hard. Overall, it provides better handling and ensures a pleasant driving experience with the added benefit of improved fuel economy.

Carbon Fiber

Carbon fiber is a kind of polymer that is prominent for its strength and lightweight. Due to these instrumental properties, carbon fiber is the most sought-after material for manufacturing. Its industrial applications include the likes of automotive and aerospace.

Some of the key properties:

  • Low weight to strength ratio
  • High stiffness
  • High tensile strength
  • Chemical resistant
  • Good thermal conductivity
  • Low thermal expansion
  • High melting point (around 3700 C)

Short and Long Fiber

Short fiber thermoplastics are made up of fiber that is 0.2-0.9 mm long. They can be injected into molds using traditional injection molding machinery. The fiber length in the pellets is limited up to 1 mm but the fiber breakage yields lower fiber length. Short fibers increase a polymer's modulus of elasticity (a measure of stiffness) and HDT (heat deflection temperature) while minimizing its coefficient of thermal expansion. Essentially, tensile strength, yield strength, and impact strength are all improved according to their respective fiber lengths. Some common applications are appliances, automotive and structural products.

On the contrary, long fiber thermoplastics are made with the full length of the pellet. Thus, the fiber length ranges from 10-15 mm. Their manufacturing process includes injection molding as well as compression molding. In terms of processability, manufacturing short fiber thermoplastic is simpler, whereas manufacturing long fiber thermoplastic is more difficult due to the complexities of maintaining fiber length. Nevertheless, long fibers are usually superior in terms of mechanical properties. Their usual applications include automotive and structural products.

Carbon Ceramic

Basically, carbon-ceramic is a siliconcarbide composite reinforced with carbon fiber. This combination results in an improved mechanical strength and fracture toughness of the material, making it 5 times stronger than steel.

Application in Racing

Carbon-ceramic brakes are no stranger to sports cars. In the world of racing, they are deemed to be pivotal due to their favorable characteristics. In a high-level competition, where there is little margin for error, carbon-ceramics offer an unprecedented amount at stake. Any racecar equipped with such brakes is capable of delivering stunning performances while keeping its competitors guessing. If we look back at history, the innovation of carbon ceramics brakes was first developed in the sector of express trains in 1989. In the automotive sector, the first adaption of this technology was made by Ferrari, followed by Bugatti and lastly McLaren. The main idea behind this adaption of carbon-ceramic brakes was to avoid wear due to extreme amounts of energy dissipation.

Compared to conventional brakes (steel or cast iron), carbon-ceramic ones are built to last the vehicle's entire life. The crystalline molecular structure of silicon-carbide is the reason for such durability. Being lightweight as well, carbon-ceramic brakes could potentially be 70% lighter than their conventional counterparts. Hence, providing a conducive environment for the enhancement of the performance of sports cars. They are designed to resist overheating and it is one of their vital characteristics to manage heat dissipation effectively. Another virtue of carbon-ceramic brakes is the ability to create the necessary friction for harsh braking over extended periods of time, proving their viability for the application in sports cars. Possessing powerful chemical properties ensures a strong defense against corrosion and rust.

A major limitation from the perspective of an average driver would be its affordability. Alternatively, its steel counterpart is easily affordable for an average driver, providing reasonable and adequate performance in the longer run. Being a solid product and offering substantial features, the cost is unreservedly justifiable. Consequently, this product targets a certain niche that does not incorporate the need of an average driver. Since these products are designed to operate at higher temperatures and higher speeds, they may not offer optimal performance under cooler conditions and slower speeds.
