In addition to providing basic information on the nature and sources of the Shariah, its characteristic features and how it differs from fiqh, this book explores some of the less well-known areas of Shariah that are seldom addressed in its commonly accessible manuals.

The book thus raises the question as to how the leading classical jurists and ulama understood the Shariah. Then there are chapters on the scope of juristic disagreement (ikhtilaf) among the individual jurists and schools of Islamic thought, the goals and objectives of Islamic law (maqasid al-Shariah), and how the Shariah accommodates the concerns of diversity within unity and those of continuity and change within the rubric of its laws.

The capability of Shariah to address social reality and change is the focus of two other chapters in this volume. The book thus puts together a volume of essays that combine the interests of both the general reader and the more advanced student and researcher of Islamic law.

Mohammad Hashim Kamali is a Professor of Islamic Law and Jurisprudence at the International Islamic University Malaysia and Dean of the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilisation (ISTAC). He has published numerous books and research articles on Islamic law and jurisprudence, and many of this works have become reference materials in English speaking universities worldwide. He is on the International Advisory boards of nine academic journals in Malaysia, USA, Kuwait, India and Pakistan, and he is listed in a number of the leading Who's Who in the world.
