Glauber Salt: Sodium Sulfate Anhydrous. Used in place of common salt when dyeing wool, nylon and silk with acid dyes. May also be used with Reactive Dyes, especially Turquoise, to increase color yield.
Glauber's salt is a common name for sodium sulfate decahydrate, it occurs as white or colorless monoclinic crystals. Upon exposure to fairly dry air it effloresces, forming powdery anhydrous sodium sulfate. Johann Glauber's was the first to produce the salt (from Hungarian spring waters). The naturally occurring salt is called mirabilite. Glauber's salt is water soluble, has a salty, bitter taste, and is sometimes used in medicine as a mild laxative; it is also used in dyeing.
According to the principles of traditional Chinese medicine, mirabilite has salty, bitter and cold properties, and is affiliated with the Stomach and Large Intestine meridians. Its functions are to resolve hardness and clear heat. Mirabilite is used to treat a variety of conditions, including constipation, sore throat, red eyes and mouth ulcers. It is also used externally to treat skin ulcers and help wounds heal.
