"Kadir Mohamad's book offers an interesting and informative account of the often fractious relations between two countries in the heart of Southeast Asia. Aided by the insight gained from more than four eventful decades in the Foreign Service, he deftly outlines the primary issues that plagued relations between Malaysia and Singapore in the last fifty years and the political, diplomatic and legal initiatives taken to address them. He ends with the hope for a better future under leadership less weighed down by the past."

"Former senior diplomat Tan Sri Kadir Mohamad presents a convincing argument in this book about why Singapore has continued on a policy of political brinksmanship with its northern neighbour for the past 50 years. In the reckoning of the former Wisma Putra secretary-general with 40 years of service to the King under his belt, it all began when former Singapore prime minister Lee Kuan Yew lost out on his dream of taking the republic to greater glory in the nascent Malaysia. Kadir paints a grim picture of the elder Lee's purported angst over the derailing of his ambitions which has been at the centre of the bilateral relationship over the past five decades despite the Singaporean leadership changing hands twice. The author may appear to be an apologist for the Malaysian government on the numerous run-ins between the two neighbours from separation and water issues, the 1990 Points of Agreement, the legal battles over Batu Putih and land reclamation, to the infamous 'Crooked Bridge'. But nothing is further from the truth as he delves into the vast reservoir of information on the rocky bilateral relationship to provide a reasonable argument over why Malaysia has behaved as it has since 1965. Kadir provides an exhaustive record of, among others, minutes, letters and documents to substantiate the Malaysian view in relation to issues of contention with Singapore. This book provides a wholly Malaysian perspective to the air of suspicion that has probably been the only point of commonality between the two neighbours since 1963."
