This pioneering volume develops and institutionalist analysis of Malaysia's post-colonial economy by exploring the political economy of development and particularly the interface between economics and law. The books shows that economic problems or crises arising from earlier policies. The early chapters survey the colonial legal heritage as well as major post-colonial developments. After a brief survey of recent developments in the financial sector, the remaining chapters consider how institutional developments and the law have been shaped by and in turn shape economic development in Malaysia.

For peasant agriculture, colonial land law profoundly transformed the rural Malay population; hence, the routine depiction of this sector as a "traditional" relic of the pre-colonial era is misleading. In the industrial sector, the government changed course after independence, promoting manufacturing investments and the technological progress, while instituting new industrial relations between the state and trade unions. The 1997-97 regional financial crisis led to renewed state intervention involving currency controls and "bail out" facilities for the banking sector and some politically well-connected businesses. The book rejects claims that corporate governance failures caused the financial crisis, and criticizes assertions that Anglo-American corporate governance arrangements are superior and should therefore be introduced in the region.
