Elephanta Caves

Upon entering the caves, a massive hall supported by large pillars and a large "Mahesamurti" statue will greet you. This remarkable, three-headed Shiva sculpture is the main attraction of this island. One of the oldest rock cut structures in the country, the Elephanta Caves are the perfect expressions of archaic Indian art associated to the cult of Lord Shiva. Primarily believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva, the Elephanta Caves are an epitome of Hindu Cave culture and are a unique testimony to a bygone civilization. The origins of the Elephanta Caves have been debated time and again, though the sculptures and the art speak volumes about the time from when they could have been popular-6th or the 8th century.

Shani Shinganapur

It is a small village in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra and houses the much revered Shani Mandir. The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Shani or Shri Shaneshwara. Devotees from all around the world pay a visit to the Shani Mandir to show their devotion and seek blessings of their deity. The unique feature of the temple is the fact that Lord Shaneshwar is not housed in a temple structure; the imposing black statue of the deity stands on a simple platform.

The Sai Baba Mandir

The Sai Baba Mandir is the motivating factor behind thousands of devotees visiting Shirdi. The temple, located in the center of the town, has the honor of housing the Samadhi (burial site) of the revered saint Sai Baba. There are no entry charges at the temple. However, you might not be able spend more than a couple of minutes at the samadhi as other devotees need to be accommodated as well.

Ellora Caves

Finest specimen of cave temple architecture in the world. Impressive on their own, these rock-hewn temples & monasteries lie just 30km away from Aurangabad city. They contain elaborate facades & exquisitely adorned interiors. These structures represent three ancient religious faiths: Hinduism, Buddhism & Jainism. In total, there are 34 cave temples & can be divided into three groups belonging roughly to three periods: Mahayana Buddhism (550-750 AD) 12 caves, Hinduism (600-875 AD) 17 caves & Jainism (800-1000 AD) 5 caves. (Ellora Caves is closed on Tuesday)

Ajanta Caves

Nestling in the inner fold of Sahyadri hills, 100 kms from Aurangabad in the shape of a mammoth horse- shoe are 30 rock caves of Ajanta, dating from 2nd century BC. Caves were discovered in the year 1819 by a group of British officers. It took around 600 years to create & carve marvellous statues in these caves with little more than a hammer & chisel. Ajanta, once the retreat of the Buddhist monastic orders features several "chaityas" & viharas. Exquisite paintings & sculptures of Buddha"s life belong to the Mahayana period. In the evening drive back to Aurangabad.(Ajanta caves is closed on Monday)
